The Governor's Cup Challenge to Raise SAT* Scores
The SAT is a college admissions test required by some colleges and universities that is developed by The
College Board Entrace Examination Board and Educational Testing Service. It consists of three major sections:
mathematics, critical reading, and writing. Each of these sections is scored on a scale of 200-800 points. The
total SAT score is calculated by adding together the scores of the three major sections; therefore, test takers
may earn a score as high as 2400.
One of Governor Sonny Perdue's top education priorities is to raise SAT scores across Georgia. In 2004, he established
the Governor's Cup Challenge, sponsored by Turner Broadcasting System (TBS), to motivate Georgia's high schools to improve
SAT* scores. He has renewed this friendly competition each year since.
The Governor's Cup Challenge allows schools to compete on 3-year average gains from their most recent SAT average based on
scores from participating seniors in critical reading and math. Most recent SAT scores are obtained by combining the critical
reading and math scores from the most recent administration of the test.
